DLSS 5, unofficial mods, and RTX 5090 connector burn

NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 3D-guided neural rendering is live on GeForce RTX 50-series GPUs. Unofficial OptiScaler and RenoDX mods put the same neural pass into other games. Independent tests show it can raise board power by about 30–50 percent, and at least one RTX 5090 16-pin connector has melted during DLSS 5 testing.

What DLSS 5 is

Unlike Super Resolution or Frame Generation, DLSS 5 generates the final look of the frame: lighting, subsurface scattering, and material response, while keeping the engine’s geometry. Official support today is RTX 50-series, laptops, and GeForce NOW, starting with NBA 2K27. NVIDIA quotes about a 50–60 percent performance cost, offset in their charts by Multi Frame Generation. Driver 616.64 or newer; in 2K27 turn on DLSS Neural Rendering and toggle with F9.

Unofficial mods

The OptiScaler DLSSNR fork injects Neural Rendering into existing DLSS games. Extract beside the game .exe, run setup_windows.bat, add your own nvngx_dlssnr.dll from the driver package, then enable Neural Rendering in the overlay. RenoDX’s ReShade addon is another path. None of this is supported by NVIDIA. DX11 titles need a DX12 bridge and cannot keep native DLSS as the upscaler. Older than Blackwell GPUs need a community-modded model DLL. Extra power draw still applies.

Connector burn

A reader documented an MSI GeForce RTX 5090 Gaming Trio OC whose 12V-2x6 plug melted during NBA 2K27 DLSS 5 testing: board power rose from about 450 W to a sustained 613.5 W in GPU-Z, then a burning smell and plastic fused to the socket. Tom’s Hardware measured large power jumps with DLSS 5 in other titles. NVIDIA had said 50-series 12V-2x6 connectors should not repeat the RTX 4090 melting issues. Causation is not proven — 5090 connectors have failed under other loads, and GPU-Z includes the 75 W PCIe slot. Seat the plug fully, prefer a native ATX 3.1 cable, avoid sharp bends, and consider a power limit if you run Neural Rendering for hours.
